Robin Hood’s Well

On the edge of the ancient Forest of Rossendale in Lancashire, situated near Helmshore is Robin Hood’s Well. Nearby is an ancient pilgrim’s route passing by the Pilgrim’s Cross which has been there since AD 1176 on Holcombe Moor and goes through Haslingden on the way to Whalley.

Covering the well is the flattened pyramid shaped piece of sandstone which has a number of worn out, carved indentations on. On this piece of sandstone on the left hand side is a wide groove, possibly created by the wearing down of the stone from a chain being on there securing a drinking cup.
